Parish Notes
Is Easter only a day, or is it a season?
Easter is a fifty-day season, stretching from sunset on the eve of Easter to Pentecost. This season is more than an extended celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Its original purpose was the continued formation of new Christians, who were usually baptized on Easter Sunday. In 325 AD, the Council of Nicea set the date for the celebration of Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. For this reason, the date will change each year and can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25. In modern times, this season gives us time to rejoice and to prepare for the ministries the Spirit has empowered us to undertake in Jesus’ name. Many churches spend the season teaching the theology of the sacraments or helping people discern their spiritual gifts.
Next Grace Prayer Group is April 21st.
Soup Bus scheduled for April 20th is CANCELLED. Instead St. Vincent’s hosts an Easter Dinner.
Equip is the Territory’s biennial Territory-wide Conference for learning, growth and equipping for ministry. Equip will resume this year, May 23-25 in Kamloops, kicking off a year-long Season of Spiritual Renewal. The theme for Equip will be “Rooted and Grounded in Love” (Eph 3:16-19). The Guest Speaker will be the Rev. Deacon Elizabeth Short. Fee, which includes meals, is $100 for the weekend. Registration forms are available in the office, attached to the announcements email, and on the Territory website. Registration deadline is April 15th to get in on the earlybird door prize. Registration fees must be received no later than May 7th. Bishop Clara personally invites us all to consider attending this event.
All year round we at Grace support several helping organizations including New Hope Society and Shepherd's Corner. New Hope Society provides a drop-in center, food and warm clothing to female sex trade workers and Shepherd’s Corner provides warm clothing and food for inadequately housed people. New Hope clients always need warm clothing, especially footwear and small women’s underwear as well as healthy hand snacks. Shepherd’s Corner distribute snacks, clothing, especially winter coats, warm socks and boots, and warm gloves. Donations in kind can be put in the baskets at the rear of the church and cash donations can be made through your regular offering.
We encourage people to sign up for coffee and goodies following the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays. Sign-up sheet is at the back bulletin board.
We would appreciate if people would volunteer to provide flowers for the Altar on Sundays. Small plants work great and last a few weeks. Please let Denise (250 562-5611) in the office or Sharon Armistead (250 964-1251) know if you would like to provide anything.
